The Spring Showcase will kick racing action off once again at Canyon Speedway Park for the 2019 season on NASCAR Weekend in Peoria, Arizona – March 8th and 9th. The 2018 edition was easily a candidate for race of the year as the AMSOIL USAC/CRA 410 Sprint Cars made their way to CSP for the first time in two years. The ground pounding Non Wing Sprints will be joined by the AZ Differential Modifieds, Askrens Trucking/Flexi Flyer Sport Mods, Allscapes Stock Cars and Non-Wing Micro Sprints.
One year ago, only the Friday portion of the event was able to run as scheduled due to a rain storm that halted action before Saturday could kick off. During the event, Chad Boespflug would come within four tenths of Dave Darlands record as he set quick time at a 13.465 during single car qualifying. “The Demon” Damion Gardner would dominate, almost half a lap ahead of runner up Jake Swanson. With every groove being used on the racetrack the race would go green to checker after a couple tries at the initial start. RJ Johnson, Brody Roa and Boespflug were the remainder of the top five. Expect all the big name California drivers to head over to do battle with the best Phoenix area wheelmen.
IMCA points will begin for the Modifieds, Sport Mods and Stock Cars with the big doubleheader. Defending champions Chaz Baca Jr (Modifieds), Speedy Madrid (Sport Mods) and George Fronsman (Stock Cars) will all look to get a jump start at defending their crowns.
Through the winter racing it has been all Ricky Thornton Jr in the AZ Differential Modifieds, picking up three wins in three events during the Winter Challenge. Thornton would lead 59 of a possible 75 laps during the three race span, as well as winning all three heat races entered. The Askrens Trucking/Flexi Flyer Sport Mods have seen three different winners in their three races with only one coming from a local driver. Rex Higgins and Chase Rudolf picked up feature wins while Cody Center snagged one win and two top fives. Mark Harrison led the second most laps during the challenge although he was unable to capture a checkered flag. Cody Center has also grabbed three wins in four features during Allscapes Stock Car action, only allowing George Fronsman to capture the lone remaining feature. Center has high hopes of finally dethroning Fronsman from the Stock Car Championship for the 2019 season.
Arizona Micro Sprint point series action kicked off just a couple weeks ago with Mason Keefer taking the early points lead as the lone feature winner so far on the season. Eric Kelly would lead the first half of the feature event before Mason Keefer took the lead and never looked back. AJ Hernandez, Brandon Sutton, Kelly and Bartlett would all grab themselves a top five while Colton Hardy and Keefer were Heat Race winners.
