Abreu, Yeley Enter SPEED SPORT Challenge

SALISBURY, N.C. — The entry list has begun growing since last week’s announcement of the inaugural SPEED SPORT Challenge on May 21 at Millbridge Speedway.

A tentative entry list shows 30 cars pre-registered for the event, including drivers such as NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver J.J. Yeley, former Cup Series crew chief Jimmy Elledge and Camping World Truck Series driver Tyler Reddick. Winged sprint car racers Rico Abreu, Joey Saldana and Paul McMahan have also filed entries for the event that will air June 12 on MAVTV.

Entries have already been filed from across the United States with drivers hailing from California, Texas, Montana, Indiana, Oklahoma and Oregon that will try their hand on the sixth-mile clay oval.

“This is shaping up to be a very exciting event,” said Millbridge Speedway owner and promoter Jeremy Burnett. “To have guest drivers from the Cup Series to the Outlaws is huge, but it’s also stirred enough interest that top competitors are coming from all over the country.”

The SPEED SPORT Challenge will be the first televised Outlaw Kart race. The 30-lap event will feature drivers from various racing backgrounds, including outlaw karts, sprint cars and stock cars, competing against the Millbridge Speedway stars in 500cc winged outlaw karts, which have the same power-to-weight ratio as 410 sprint cars.

SPEED SPORT Productions will tape Millbridge Speedwayʼs five divisions with the focus on the SPEED SPORT Challenge main event for the premier winged open karts. Millbridge Speedwayʼs classes include beginner box stocks for racers ranging 5-8 years old, box stocks ranging ages 9-13, intermediates featuring Marcos Ambroseʼs new Thumper X engine, a sportsman division and the premier 500cc open division.

The event will be telecast as part of the MAVTV series “SPEED SPORT” scheduled to air on June 12.
