CENTER CAPTURES FIRST STOCK CAR SHOOTOUT CROWN!

By:  TONY STEELE

Tony Steele On a weekend spent honoring the late Dan Shepherd, known for his stock car driving days throughout Arizona as well as his time spent as an official at Canyon Speedway Park, the racing action did not disappoint. After years of trying to earn the prestigious title, Cody Center would finally claim the crown, earning the 77 lap Stock Car Shootout and Dan Shepherd Memorial win. Five other divisions were on hand for two full days of racing in Peoria.

In Allscapes Stock Car action it was Ty Warner, Cody Center and Georgie Fronsman picking up heat race wins early on Saturday night. Chris Boulware would fire off the feature from the pole but it would be Colorado driver Tony Hill from the third spot earning the first lap led. Hill seemed to have the race in hand while Cody Center and George Fronsman raced their way through the pack. Coming to the white flag it would be Center taking control of the race, on his way to his first feature win on the weekend. Center beat Fronsman to the line while Hill fell back to third. On night two it was Fronsman and Hill grabbing heat race wins before the long awaited 77 lap feature event began. In the long race that plays out like a novel, the first chapter would be written for Georgie Fronsman who led the first nine laps of the feature event. Hill took over for the next three laps, but the lead was short lived as George Fronsman made his way past on lap 13. For the next forty laps of the event it was all Fronsman out in front, until eventual winner of the event Cody Center would make his move with 24 laps remaining. Driving his way up from the 8th starting spot, Center would go on to sweep the weekend and earn his first career Stock Car Shootout ahead of DJ Werkmeister and Tony Hill.

Arizona Differential Modifieds kicked off Saturday night heat race action with former champion Guy Norton, Austin Kiefer and Paul Nelson earning heat race wins. Norton would continue his string of recent strong runs by leading the first five laps of the feature event before the Bakersfield, CA driver Kiefer worked his way past Norton into the front spot. The front row would prove to be strong as Kiefer would lead the remaining twenty laps of the race on his way to the feature win ahead of 7th starting Ryan Roath and Norton. On night two it would be Kiefer, Jason Noll and Anthony Merritt taking the heat race wins to start off the show. Bryson Curry would kick off the feature to lead the first lap before Kiefer took control, looking to be en route to winning both main events on the weekend. With nine laps remaining in the race, Noll would make his way around Kiefer to sweep the evening, taking the feature win ahead of Kiefer and hard charger John Parmeley.

Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks looked to earn some extra cash over the Labor Day Weekend event as 26 cars checked in for night number one. Nathan DeRagon, Joe Vlasity, Collin Phipps and Joe Peterson took home heat race wins ahead of the feature. B Main action saw 6 drivers head home, with Scott Tenney, Max Zachrison, Corky Warner and Ashley Stafford transferring to the feature. In feature action, Joe Peterson got the jump from the second row to lead the first ten laps before giving way to Joe Vlasity. Vlasity would pace the field for the next 6 circuits until Lyle Askren took control of the race. Askren would go on to cross the finish line first, but a disqualification in tech handed the win to Nathan DeRagon with Bradley Stafford and Peterson rounding out the top three. On night two, we would see much of the same with another big field on hand, giving heat race wins to Jason Duggins, Vlasity, Askren and Peterson. Scott Tenney once again captured the B Feature win ahead of Richard Bennett, Corky Warner and John Patterson. While six drivers once again packed up and headed home for the evening it was Daniel Romero pacing the field to the green flag, leading the first six laps. Askren wasted no time in getting to the front during night number two, taking over the lead on lap seven and not looking back. Once again, Askren would cross the finish line first but another tech violation would give the second feature win of the weekend to DeRagon who drove up from his 13th starting spot. DeRagon would be scored the winner ahead of Vlasity and Duggins.

In Sport Compact action it was Jackie Parmeley taking the checkered flag in the heat race before leading the way through the first 13 laps of the feature event. With only two laps remaining in the show, point leader John Barron made his way from the 4th starting spot into the lead, en route to the win ahead of Parmeley and Billy Ayres Jr. On night two Parmeley wouldn’t make any missteps, first taking the win in the lone heat race for the night. Starting from the outside front row in the feature, Parmeley led all 15 laps green to checker to sweep the night ahead of the young James Foster Jr and John Barron.

Western Modlites brought 14 cars on opening night, with the Priest father son duo of John and Brenden sweeping the heat races to kick things off. In feature action we would see four different race leaders over the course of 20 laps with Sean Conyers leading the first before handing off to Richard Kemp who would lead until lap 4. Conyers worked his way back around Kemp to lead the next 8 laps while Brenden Priest maneuvered through the field from his 7th starting spot. On lap 13, Priest would solidify his hard charger award by taking the lead on his way to the win ahead of Conyers and John Priest. On night two, it was once again Brenden Priest taking the only heat race win, his 4th of the season at CSP. Once again we would see 4 different leaders throughout the duration of the main event with Steve Bender leading the way from the pole for the first 4 circuits. On lap 5, Brenden Priest would swap the lead with Bender before giving it back on lap 6. Bender would pace the field for a few more laps until Priest put the nail in the coffin with a pass for the lead on lap 10. In a feature that was cut short to 12 laps, Priest would get the win ahead of Conyers and Kemp.

On Saturday night, Cory Brown and recent feature winner Tyler Rodriguez would start off the evening with heat race wins in the Dwarf Car portion of the card. In feature action Eddie Schuhle would kick things off from the pole position and take full advantage, leading a large majority of the race. While Schuhle paced the field, Cory Brown and Dusty Jager put on a show, dicing through the field from the fourth row. Brown would work his way around race leader Schuhle on lap 19 with Jager in tow. Brown would hold of Jager for the win with Schuhle coming home in third. On the second night of action it was former dwarf car champion John Foster and Tyler Rodriguez earning heat race wins. Heading into the main event, Foster would start on the pole but it was Mark Pollock leading the first lap. Pollock would maintain that lead for the first two circuits until Foster was able to make the pass for the lead on lap 3. The lead would remain the same through the next 13 laps until Chris Vernon made his way up to the front from his second row starting spot. Vernon would make his way by Foster with 5 laps remaining, earning the win ahead of Foster and Jager.
