Still looking for the elusive and record-tying fourth victory in the Indianapolis 500, Helio Castroneves paced the opening afternoon of practice for the Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

The Team Penske veteran topped the charts with a 40.059 second lap (224.665 mph) around the legendary 2.5-mile Indiana oval. Only teammate Simon Pagenaud posted a faster lap – albeit in the cooler morning session.

Even though speeds mean little on the first day of practice, it was a statement that Castroneves should still be a contender despite car owner Roger Penske moving him to his new IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car program this season.

Castroneves hadn’t turned a lap in an Indy car prior to May and only recently made his first start of the season over the weekend in the IndyCar Grand Prix on the IMS infield road course.

“We started right away with a good pace,” Castroneves said. “Good job (by) everyone, running issue-free. We still have a long way to go, but it was a very base test with the new car actually, with traffic and everything.  Looking forward to another day tomorrow, so we continue to work and pursue that right result.”

His teammates aren’t surprised.

“It’s Helio. We call him the Speed King,” Pagenaud said. “This is what he lives for. He loves Indy and he’s very, very focused on getting his fourth win. He’s very ready, like a fish in the water.”

Ed Carpenter was second-fastest (224.523 mph), followed by Jay Howard (224.518), Scott Dixon (224.353) and Marco Andretti (224.217). Carpenter also had the fastest time without a tow of all drivers on-track.

Danica Patrick, making the final motorsports appearance of her career, was 18th with a 222.728 mph.

“Today went really well. We accomplished what we wanted to,” Patrick said. “A really solid day.”

The former IndyCar-turned-NASCAR driver is making her first appearance in an open-wheel car since the 2011 IndyCar season. As such, she is still seeking a degree of comfort behind the wheel and in traffic.

“The team, they’ve been encouraging me to use my tools,” she said. “I’m like, ‘I need to feel the traffic first, before we create another variable.”

Conor Daly was late to the track, since his car wasn’t completed until midday on Tuesday afternoon. His best lap was just a 41.9130.

The session was interrupted for 30 minutes due to lightning in the distance, but was able to resume without further delay as rain never touched the track. Wednesday practice runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. All track activity can be viewed on IndyCar’s social media channels.
