Different teams have different objectives, strategies with Formula 1 testing

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel topped the time sheets on the first day of a four-day Formula 1 preseason test in Barcelona, as Williams F1 team failed to deliver a car on time.

Grand Prix cars are finally back on track, 85-days after the season ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and it was Ferrari who hit the ground running the fastest.

Completing an impressive 169 laps on the first day of the test — a day which is typically used for checking that the wind-tunnel and simulator data matches what actually happens on track — Ferrari set about completing race simulations. Ferrari’s effort is rarely seen on day one of the first of two four-day tests.

Looking too deeply into the times set during testing, at any point across the eight days, is a dangerous game as fuel loads, energy usage and other parameters normally readily available are not given to the media.

Therefore, fans of Mercedes or Renault should not panic at seeing their drivers at the bottom of the order. Equally, it is not yet the time to rejoice for McLaren who set the second fastest time with Carlos Sainz Jr.

Williams, meanwhile, will not take to the track until at least Wednesday after delays in building the car have greatly set back their season preparations.
