GILE AND HARDY SHINE AT SUNSET SHOWDOWN! BY: Tony Steele

Dennis Gile found victory lane on the opening night of the doubleheader at Canyon Speedway Park in the ASCS Desert Non Wing Sprint Car Series, while Colton Hardy came away the big winner, earning three checkered flags across two divisions. Hardy was the only driver to sweep the weekend in the Micro Sprints while the four other divisions each had two separate winners during the event.

Dennis Gile led the opening night feature early in ASCS competition before swapping the lead with Bruce St. James in a tight race up front. St. James would eventually give way to Gile on Lap 9 who would maintain his hold on the lead for the remainder of the race. A late caution would give Hardy a shot at the win, but Gile was too strong out front, beating Hardy and Josh Shipley to the line for his first win of the season. Hardy would improve one spot on the second night of competition, becoming the fifth different winner in five races for the ASCS club. The win wouldn’t come easy as Hardy charged from the 10th position while Josh Shipley paced the field for the majority of the show. Coming to the checker Hardy would make his move, earning the win by .026 seconds over Shipley and Friday winner Gile. Josh Shipley closed the gap to four points with two podium finishes, but his brother Kyle maintains his point lead after five events.

Racin’ Jason Noll earned his first Arizona Differential Modified feature win of the year in dramatic fashion with a last lap pass over Ryan Roath coming out of the final corner on Friday night. Guy Norton would pace the field early on, leading the first five laps before John Parmeley would take his turn out front. On lap 13, Roath would grab a hold of the top spot until a slip up on the white flag lap allowed Noll to get his nose to the inside down the backstretch. Noll would force his car into the hole, stealing the win away from Roath with Bubba Stafford rounding out the podium. Kollin Hibdon would be next in line on Saturday to keep Roath from victory lane, leading the way for all but the first two laps of the feature. Roath charged his way through the field from the 9thposition, but came up one spot short for the second night in a row while the youngster Hibdon would race away for his first win of the year. Hard Charger of the race Austin Kuehl would drive from his 11th starting position to finish 3rd.

Chase Rudolf continued his domination of the Askrens Trucking/Flexi Flyer Sport Mod division at CSP throughout the weekend, earning two more feature victories. An impressive 26 cars checked in for action on Friday night, with all cars taking the green flag for main event action. Pole sitter Jacob Madrid led the way for the first eight laps before Rudolf made his way through the field from the 11th starting spot to take the lead on lap nine. Rudolf would beat out 9th starting Taylor Kuehl and Lyle Askren. Night two was an even tougher task for the Norwalk, Iowa driver, this time starting from the 12th position. KJ Goodwin kicked off the show from the pole, leading the first lap before Darin Center would take control for the next 6 circuits. On lap 8, Rudolf had made his way up to the front and worked his way around Center to grab ahold of the lead, holding on for the last 13 laps for his second win of the weekend. Rudolf took the win ahead of Center and defending track champion Speedy Madrid.

The Center and Fronsman show would hold court once again in the Allscapes Stock Cars with both drivers splitting wins over the weekend. On Friday night it would be Mike Goodwin leading the way for the first four laps around the track before eventual winner Cody Center would take over. The only driver coming into the weekend with a top five in all three events so far on the season, Center had been held winless until Friday. Center would earn the win over Joey McCullough and Lonnie Foss. On Saturday it was more of what CSP fans have seen over the last few years in the Stock Cars with George Fronsman ending up in victory lane. Larry Brigner earned a lap led early before Dennis Losing took over for the next 6 laps. On lap 8 it would be the familiar face of Fronsman taking hold of the lead and not giving it up. Fronsman would stay out front to earn his third win in five starts ahead of Foss and Hard Charger Gene Henrie.

The only sweep of the weekend took place in the Arizona Micro Sprints with Colton Hardy earning two of his three feature wins of the event. On Friday, with 21 Micros checked in, CJ Bunch would jump out to the early lead before defending champion Paul Martin took control. Martin would pace the field until lap 7 where Hardy would make the pass for the win, leading the final 14 circuits. Hardy earned the win ahead of Martin and AJ Hernandez while Kurt Johnson took the Hard Charger award with an impressive run from 21st to 6th. On night two it was more of the same for Hardy, but this time it was a much simpler task. Hardy would start from the pole and lead all 20 laps en route to his sweep of the weekend. Brandon Sutton continued his consistent driving with his second top five of the weekend and third on the year while Paul Martin landed his second podium of the weekend finishing in third.
