HODGES AND SCHUERENBERG CAPTURE SPRING SHOWCASE SUCCESS! BY:  Tony Steele

Josh Hodges and Hunter Schuerenberg would capture victories during the Spring Showcase – the lone stop of the year for the traveling AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series. The weekend would be void of sweeps, with differing winners for each class on both nights of action. Ryan Roath and John Parmeley would pick up the wins in the Arizona Differential Modifieds while Chase Rudolf and David Jones owned the Flexi Flyer/Askrens Trucking Sport Mods. Steffan Carey and George Fronsman would split the Allscapes Stock Cars events while Josh Castro and Paul Martin earned Micro Sprint feature wins.

Hunter Schuerenberg kicked off festivities with a 13.575 quick time qualifying effort in the Reinbold/Underwood owned machine on night number one of the Spring Showcase. After qualifying and heat race action Brody Roa would fire off the feature event from the pole position leading lap number one before Josh Hodges took control. Hodges would lead the field for the next 29 circuits to earn the first win of the year in the AMSOIL USAC/CRA Series ahead of Roa, Isaac Chapple and RJ Johnson. Schuerenberg would remain fast on night two, setting the third best time behind Johnson and eventual fast time earner Damion Gardner (13.469). The second feature of the weekend would be much more competitive with multiple lead changes during the thirty lap feature. Roa once again led early, heading the field for the first 12 laps of the race before giving way to Schuerenberg. A battle would commence with multi time Southwest Sprint Car Champion RJ Johnson taking the helm for a lap before Schuerenberg would make the final pass for the lead in turn one with five laps to go in the race. Schuerenberg would beat Gardner, Roa and Johnson.

IMCA point competition would also fire off for their 2019 points campaign with three divisions during the Spring Showcase. Bubba Stafford and Ross Statham would snag heat race wins on the opening night before Ryan Roath turned in an outstanding performance in the feature event to earn the first victory of the year ahead of Jeremy Payne and hard charger Zane Devilbiss. Night two would see Bubba Stafford continue his heat race winning ways before John Parmeley drove from the front row back to victory lane at CSP for the first time in 2019. Friday’s feature winner Roath would finish in the runner up position while Guy Norton would overcome his mechanical gremlins to take home a podium finish. Both features for the Modifieds would go Green to Checker.

Taylor Kuehl and Bryan Miller would also earn heat race victories to kick off the 2019 season in the Askrens Trucking/Flexi Flyer Sport Mods. In the draw/redraw style event to start the year off it would be Bryan Miller pacing the field to green before quickly giving way to Norwalk, Iowa driver Chase Rudolf. Rudolf who has seen success already at Canyon during winter events this year drove away to the win ahead of Ron Poe and Bryan Miller. Night two heat race winners would be Speedy Madrid, Taylor Kuehl and Jacob Madrid. Speedy Madrid kicked off the feature from the pole but the battle for the lead would soon be settled between sixth place starter David Jones and tenth place starter Rudolf. Jones would eventually win out, placing his newly acquired Kyler Repella Motorsports ride in victory lane for the first time as a team. Rudolf would finish second with Rex Higgins earning third.

The growing Allscapes Stock Car class would kick off their points season with George and Georgie Fronsman keeping the heat race wins in the family circle on night number one. Cody Center would retain the early lead from the pole position until about a third of the way through the feature when Steffan Carey drove to the inside in turn three. A battle for the lead would ensue across multiple restarts between Carey and Fronsman before issues on Fronsman’s machine would sideline the champion. Carey would hold off Joey McCullough, Gene Henrie and Center for the win. Night two would once again see the Fronsmans sweep heat race action before George would find victory lane for the first time during the points paying season. Friday night winner Carey would drive from 12thup to the runner up spot while Lonnie Foss finished off the podium.

Points leader Mason Keefer would head the Arizona Micro Sprints into the doubleheader that would take place on the big track. Keefer would earn a heat race win on night one with Josh Castro and Jackson Wellman. Castro and Keefer would share the front row with Castro winning the battle for the checkered flag, earning a victory during the second night of racing action for the Micro Sprints season. Keefer and Castro would once again grab heat race victories on night two of the Spring Showcase, this time alongside Cameron LaRose. Defending champion Paul Martin would fire off from the pole position in the Saturday feature while Brandon Sutton worked his way from the 12th starting spot up to second. Sutton wouldn’t be able to make his way past Martin who would grab his first win of the year while Castro brought home the third position.
