Joe Gibbs Racing announced on Thursday that it was set to enter the ARCA Racing Series with driver Riley Herbst for the 2017 season.

The team also fields cars in the Cup Series and Xfinity Series, but this is its first official foray into ARCA. JGR announced that Herbst will pilot the No. 18 Toyota in the series full time, with a sponsor and crew chief announcement set for a later date.

The 17-year-old spent last season in the K&N Pro Series with Bill McAnally Racing. He recorded seven top fives and 13 top 10s in 17 starts. He also competed in Super Late Models for Fury Racing alongside crew chief Jeff Fultz and technical directors Tony Eury Sr. and Tony Eury Jr.

Herbst will continue to work with some of the best names in stock-car racing as he transitions over to the Gibbs banner.

“It’s great to have Riley join Joe Gibbs Racing,” said JGR executive vice president Steve deSouza. “He has experienced success in a variety of racing venues, and we want to provide him the opportunity to continue that success at this level of competition.”

As a child, Herbst watched his father and grandfather compete in off-road racing classics such as the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. After starting his racing career with go-karts at the age of 5, he progressed to trophy karts, legends cars, speed trucks and eventually late models.

“I grew up watching my dad compete in races like the Baja 500, so I’ve always wanted to be a racer myself,” Herbst said. “I’m so appreciative of Bill McAnally and his entire racing crew. They were an incredible group of people to work with and learn from. They were an instrumental part of my career. Having the opportunity to join Joe Gibbs Racing will take me to the next level.”
