The SWDRA Late Model club will see their first action of the season at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona this Saturday night. This weekend will mark their first time back to the speedway since the success of the Inaugural Harvest Hustle held Thanksgiving Weekend of 2017. Joining the Late Models will be the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars, Desert Restorations IMCA Hobby Stocks, Dwarf Cars and Power 600 Micro Sprints. The event will mark the point season opener for the Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks as well as the beginning of the Micro Sprint season.
The Late Model season kicked off last weekend in Casa Grande for their 2018 point season. John Cornell kicked off his title defense in victory lane as he took the win ahead of Jerry Fincher. Bruce Duckett, Mike Masters and Doug Paxon rounded out the official top five. Cornell will look to continue his hot streak as he grabbed three feature victories at CSP last season.
The Allscapes Stock Cars will see a battle at the top once again as George Fronsman comes into the 2018 season poised to dominate the division one more time. Fronsman picked up a total of 17 feature victories in 2017, in points and non points events. The defending champion started the year strong at the Winter Challenge, winning two events, while having mechanical problems in the other two. Out of towner Joe Bellm snagged one victory while one of Fronsman’s biggest rivals for the championship this season, Cody Center, picked up the other. Center got his second win of the year just a couple of weeks ago at the Steve Stroud Memorial while Fronsman continues to battle issues on his #41 machine.
Another track championship will get rolling this weekend as the first points race is scheduled to take place for the Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks. Joe Vlasity has shown that he is the early car to beat as he almost swept all four events at the Winter Challenge. Round four of the Winter Challenge saw Joe Peterson complete an unbelievable run from the back of the pack to beat Vlasity while Bradley Stafford used a late race pass to take home the win at the Steve Stroud Memorial.
Dwarf Cars will pack the pits as always, coming off a strong Winter Challenge where three different drivers found victory lane. John Foster will look to defend his title after a strong and consistent 2017 across all of the valley’s racetracks. Challengers for Foster will be aplenty as the Dwarfs ramp up their 2018 points effort. Dustin Washburn led the way at CSP last year with two feature wins. Matt Sargeant, Brian Stehr, Levi Rudy, Tony Martin, Sheldon Creed and David Teves also picked up victories in 2017.
Micro Sprints will fire off their 2018 season this weekend as they will be spread across multiple facilities for the first time in a couple seasons. Jarrett Martin is the defending champion in the Power 600 class and will be fighting to hold off challengers such as Mason Keefer, Michael Colegrove and possibly rookie driver Scotty Milan. Milan will make the jump from the Restricted Class this year after grabbing the championship in 2017. The Power 600 class will kick off the season on the short track this Saturday night.
