FROM BRAD KESELOWSKI TO MARK MARTIN, MANY HAVE FAILED TO WIN THE GREAT AMERICAN RACE

Even a partial list of drivers who have won the Daytona 500 makes up a murderers’ row of racing talent.

Junior Johnson. Dale Earnhardt Sr. Richard Petty. David Pearson. Cale Yarborough. Jimmie Johnson. Jeff Gordon. Bobby Allison. Darrell Waltrip. A.J. Foyt. Mario Andretti.

Oddly enough, it’s possible to compose another stellar list of top-gun racers considering only those drivers who haven’t won the 500.

That impressive list would include:

Tony Stewart: Arguably one of the top-20 American racers of all time, the freshly retired Stewart never won the Daytona 500 despite scoring four times in the summer Cup race at Daytona. He also failed to win the Indianapolis 500 in his years on that side of the fence.

Rusty Wallace: The Cup champion and NASCAR Hall of Fame member not only failed to win the 500, he also went 0-for-forever in all Cup races at Daytona. 45 events, 0 wins.

Mark Martin: Martin hated the circuit’s restrictor-plate tracks, and his record shows the results. He never won the 500, although he came close in 2007 when Kevin Harvick outran him by a few feet in a calamitous finish.

The Brothers Busch: Somewhat mysteriously, Kurt and Kyle each own Cup championships, but both carry big goose eggs into the 500. Kurt is 0-for-16, while Kyle is 0-for-11.

The Brothers Labonte: Terry and Bobby also won Cup titles but fell short in the 500. Terry was second in 1997 when Hendrick Motorsports swept the top three spots. Jeff Gordon won, and Ricky Craven was third.

Brad Keselowski: The Kez has been a superb restrictor-plate racer, but his next Daytona 500 win will be his first.

Carl Edwards: The Missouri driver, now sitting in the wings, is 0-for-12 in the 500 and owns no victories at restrictor-plate tracks. Will he have another shot?
