MARRIOTT EVENS THE TALLY, TAKES ROUND FOUR OF WINTER CHALLENGE! BY: Tony Steele

Peoria, Ariz. (Jan 28, 2018) – Hunter Marriott picked up the win in the Leading Edge IMCA Modifieds, evening the score with Chandler driver Ricky Thornton Jr in the four race Winter Challenge Series. Speedy Madrid picked up his second win of the series in the Arizona Differential IMCA Sport Mods while Cody Center picked up his first win in the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars since early in 2017. Joe Peterson prevented a week long sweep by Joe Vlasity in the Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks and Darren Brown became the third different Dwarf Car driver to grab a feature win in their four races.

As the Leading Edge Modifieds rolled out onto the track it became apparent quickly the bottom side of the track would be dominant. As the dust settled and the rubber began to lay down, Marriott worked his way into the lead early and never looked back. It wouldn’t be an easy race to win for “The Hustler”, as the last half of the race was a major battle through lap traffic. As Hunter methodically worked his way through traffic, Cody Laney and Ricky Thornton Jr reeled the leader back in, creating a battle for the win to finish out the Feature event. Marriott would narrowly hold on for the victory while Cody Laney would hold back Thornton for the second position. Jeremy Payne would bring his borrowed car home in fourth while Jason Wolla was finally able to put together a solid day, earning a heat race win and finishing fifth in the Feature.

Shane Simper did what he could early in the feature to try and double up in the Arizona Differential IMCA Northern Sport Mods, but Speedy Madrid proved to be stronger as Madrid grabbed his second win of the series. Madrid worked his way around Simper before the halfway point of the 20 Lap “A” Feature event for the Sport Mods and despite every shot that Simper threw at him, Madrid would hold on to take the victory. Simper would fade late in the event, allowing Chase Alves to finish his strong run in the second position. Simper would wind up in third with Jason George in fourth and Bill Miller rounding out the top five.

Cody Center put together a quality showing in the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars, leading from flag to flag to take the win and a $500 paycheck during round four of the Winter Challenge series. George Fronsman applied pressure on Center throughout the entire feature until being forced to retire due to mechanical problems with three laps to go. Center would get the win ahead of Larry Brigner who put together a solid effort in his Pure Stock. Dennis Losing would run in third ahead of Mike Brigner and Nick Langer.

After an early flat tire sent him to the hot pit for repairs, Joe Peterson worked his way from worst to first to take the victory in the Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks. A timely yellow would allow Peterson a chance to get his tire changed in time to stay on the lead lap as he re-entered the track in the thirteenth position. Vlasity led the majority of the race while the crowd cheered on Peterson who was picking off cars every lap on his way back to the front. Throughout the long green flag run, Peterson would eventually catch Vlasity and with the crowd on their feet, made the winning pass. Peterson would cruise to the victory with Vlasity maintaining the second position. Bradley Stafford ended up in third with Merle Zachrison and Chucky Thornton rounding out the top five.

Darren Brown recovered from a rough outing on Saturday by taking the checkered flag in the Dwarf Car 20 Lap Feature during round four of the Winter Challenge. Brown had multiple chances to take the lead on Saturday before ulitimately spinning twice, ending his day early. On Sunday he made no mistakes and drove to the front of the pack quickly. With Saturday feature winner John Isabella on his rear bumper, Brown held his car steady and grabbed the victory ahead of Isabella, Rory Mortenson, Mac Marmon and Keith Welch.
