Ricky Thornton Jr Reclaims Victory Lane at CSP! BY:  Tony Steele

Peoria, Ariz. (Jan 20, 2018)

The last time we wrote about Chandler, Arizona driver Ricky Thornton Jr, it was February of 2016. Thornton had just come off of three victories in five Winter Challenge events before sweeping two nights of the Desert Classic. After an almost two year hiatus from Peoria, Thornton once again sits in Victory Lane after taking the win in the Leading Edge IMCA Modifieds. Thornton now sits on six victories in his last eight races at CSP, with three events to go in the 2018 Winter Challenge. Jason George completed a last lap pass to win in the Arizona Differential Sport Mods while George Fronsman brought home the hardware in the Allscapes Stock Cars. Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks were once again a victim of a Joe Vlasity clinic, while Dustin Washburn picked up his first win of the year in the Dwarf Cars.

Jason Noll jumped to the lead at the start of the Leading Edge IMCA Modified 25 lap “A” Feature before Thornton Jr capitalized about a third of the way into the race. Once into the lead Thornton never saw a true test for the lead even after a handful of restarts. While he was tempted to go to the high side, Thornton quipped in victory lane, “I knew when I got the lead on the bottom I had to stay there and just keep it as smooth as I could”. Smooth was the story up front as Thornton picked up his second feature win of the year in his new Jet Chassis. Missouri wheelman Hunter Marriott cruised to a runner up finish while the defending track champion Chaz Baca Jr wound up in third after a hard fought battle with Shawn Strand. Strand worked the middle of the track to the best of his ability but was unable to work his way onto the podium. Peoria’s Jason Noll finished off the top five after fading in the middle of the feature.

Jason George went from worst to first after an early mistake caused him to bring out a yellow, sending him to the rear of the field. George told the fans in Victory Lane, “I flooded it over in turn three and four so I killed the motor which brought out that yellow. Luckily I was able to work my way back to the front to put myself in a position to make that pass at the end”. Defending track champion Dale Irby looked to have wrapped up his first win on the young season as it seemed nobody had a true shot to overtake him throughout a majority of the race. A late green white checkered restart setup George for the last lap pass for the win as he nipped Irby at the line by a bumper as they drag raced to the checker. George took the win with Irby in second, followed by Speedy Madrid, Bill Miller and Chase Alves.

George Fronsman picked up where he left off in the Allscapes IMCA Stock Car division as he brought home the win during day number one at the Winter Challenge. Grabbing the lead early on from his front row starting position, George never looked back. Cody Center ran a strong runner up race until Colorado driver Joe Bellm was able to overtake the second spot. Bellm would end the race there with Center behind him in a close third. Dennis Losing and Gene Henrie would round out the top five in the 20 lap Stock Car “A” Feature.

Joe Vlasity kept his strong performances rolling through the new year as he found his way to victory lane once again in the Desert Restorations IMCA Hobby Stocks. Once again he found himself fighting off Bradley Stafford for the win. Behind the leaders, Merle Zachrison and Paul O’Connor put on the best race of the day as they battled side by side for almost fifteen laps until Merle was able to take the advantage. Max Zachrison put his best effort forth to continue the battle with O’Connor, eventually winning out as O’Connor fell back to the fifth spot.

Dustin Washburn continued his Canyon Speedway Park winning ways as he grabbed the checkered flag in the Dwarf Cars. In a wild and chaotic race that was plagued by cautions, Washburn found his way into the lead after the halfway point and held on to take the victory. Numerous drivers found their way to the lead throughout the race, but Washburn was the only driver who was able to maintain the lead. Washburn grabbed the win ahead of Mac Marmon, Ryan O’Connor, Dalton Hatten and John Levitt.

Next up will be Round 2 of the IMCA Winter Challenge on January 21st. Leading Edge IMCA Modifieds will once again headline the Arizona Differential Northern Sport Mods, Allscapes Stock Cars, Desert Restorations Hobby Stocks and Dwarf Cars.
