Rocky Mountain Raceways to close after 2018 season…”and, another one bites the dust – RR-AZ”

Standard-Examiner Staff

Rocky Mountain Raceways, a multi-use racetrack facility in West Valley City, announced Thursday that 2018 will mark its final season of business after 22 years.

RMR says it will hold more than 140 events during the final season on its NHRA-sanctioned drag strip, 3/8-mile asphalt oval track, and its motocross facility.

Its more than 50 acres of property was sold in 2014, and RMR operated on a five-year lease to continue racing operations, the company said in a news release. That lease expires at the end of the 2018 racing season without an option to renew.

RMR says it and the Young Automotive Group, creators of the venue, looked into purchasing new property for a new track, and that it also reached out to the Utah Sports Commission and West Valley City to turn operations into a joint venture, but nothing developed.

The release indicated the land will be set for commercial development.

“I feel very proud of the last 22 years and what we’ve built and the historic racing and family memories we’ve made,” Spencer Young Sr. said in the release. “We invite you to come out and celebrate with us during this final season.”
