THORNTON ROLLS TO ROUND THREE VICTORY AT WINTER CHALLENGE! BY: Tony Steele

Peoria, Ariz. (Jan 27, 2018) – Ricky Thornton Jr showed off his chess skills during the Leading Edge IMCA Modified “A” Feature as he rolled through the middle of the track around Hunter Marriott on his way to capturing his second win of the Winter Challenge. Shane Simper found his way into Victory Lane at CSP while George Fronsman goes 2 for 3 in the mini series so far. Joe  Vlasity has won all three hobby stock races through this point and John Isabella picked up his first win of the year in the Dwarf Cars.

After a three wide start to the race that lasted for over a full lap, Hunter Marriott battled his way into the lead position early in the feature event ahead of Ricky Thornton Jr and Chaz Baca Jr. As the race approached the halfway mark, Thornton began to show his nose to the inside of Marriott, finally pulling up alongside Marriott’s Rage Chassis. With Thornton pressuring to the inside, Hunter changed his line just enough for Thornton to switch things up and take his Jet Chassis to the middle of the track, allowing him to drive around the outside of Marriott. Thornton would secure the win, while Marriott began to fade, making way for Tim Ward to grab the runner up spot in his first race back in Arizona. Marriott would be able to hold onto the third spot ahead of Cody Laney and Jeremy Payne.

Jason George looked to have the Arizona Differential IMCA Sport Mod feature locked up until a mistake down the backstretch saw his car skid off the track. Utah driver Shane Simper would take control of the race, grabbing the lead after seeing the checkers once already during the Dwarf Car Feature where he finished sixth. George would get back up into second and make a challenge for the lead, but ultimately he would come up short as Simper went home with the win. George would finish in the runner up spot, giving himself one win and two second place finishes so far through the Winter Challenge. Bill Miller, Jimmy Davy and Round Two feature winner Speedy Madrid finished off the top five.

After the lone heat race was complete in the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars, it looked like Fronsman would have some more challenges as Mike Brigner and Larry Brigner swept the top two spots. After a redraw, Fronsman then found himself on the pole, giving himself an easy path to victory as he held off the $ machine of Cody Center for 20 laps of Stock Car action. Fronsman would take the win, ahead of Center, while Larry Brigner held off Dennis Losing in a battle for the third spot. Nick Langer was able to overcome a spin earlier in the feature to grab himself a top five.

Two heat races of Desert Restorations Hobby Stock action saw Shea Kendig and Joe Vlasity take the checkered flags. When it came to feature time, Vlasity would sweep the day and so far the series as he now has three victories in three starts during this Winter Challenge. Merle Zachrison was happy to once again best the youngster Max Zachrison as they rounded out the top three. Allen Hakes and Kyle Cardinal would finish out the top five.

The Dwarf Cars of Arizona club would see a new winner for the first time this series as John Isabella would make his way to victory lane for the first time this season. The win would mark his third year in a row with a victory at CSP. The racing was intense up in the front as Darren Brown made multiple efforts at taking the lead, losing his grip both times. Brown would head pitside after his second spin. Mac Marmon finished a strong effort in the runner up position while Rory Mortenson, Tim Fitzpatrick and Ryan O’Connor rounded out to the top five.
